Target Line Off the Tee

Fairways hit only tell part of the story.

A drive that finishes safely on a 60-yard-wide fairway and a drive that finds a tight landing area on a narrow course are often treated the same statistically, even though the demands of the shot were completely different.

That’s why Upgame measures tee shots against a fixed target line instead of simply the fairway itself.

By tracking dispersion relative to the player’s intended line, we get a much clearer understanding of true accuracy and control off the tee. The tighter the pattern around the target line, the more predictable the player’s driving becomes. Wider dispersion patterns increase the chances of difficult recovery shots, penalty misses, and unnecessary stress during a round.

Tracking shots this way also allows Upgame to generate 25 / 45 / 65-yard zone metrics for every club off the tee. These windows show how often a player keeps the ball within a specific range of their intended target, helping identify which clubs create the most reliable shot patterns under pressure.

The data also reveals left and right miss tendencies, along with how far those misses tend to travel. Over time, these patterns can uncover strategic tendencies, technical trends, or even equipment-related issues that may otherwise go unnoticed.

End Shot Result

Not every missed fairway carries the same consequence.

Some misses roll just into the first cut with a perfect angle to the green. Others lead to blocked approaches, recovery shots, or penalties. Traditional driving stats often fail to separate the two.

Upgame adds context to every tee shot by categorising the end result as In Play, Minor Miss, Major Miss, or Penalty.

This creates a much clearer picture of how damaging a miss actually was, not just whether the fairway was technically hit or missed.

It also helps separate poor execution from poor outcomes. A player may miss several fairways during a round while still keeping the ball in manageable positions. Another may hit a high percentage of fairways but make one or two costly mistakes that heavily impact scoring.

When combined with target-line dispersion, end-shot result becomes even more powerful. If a player consistently drives the ball close to their intended target line but still records too many major misses or penalties, it may suggest the strategy itself is too aggressive for their current shot pattern.
